Uruguay: livestock country
Livestock
The livestock industry has always been a key activity in Uruguay.. The country is one of the main producers of meat , which is internationally known for its safety, quality, genetics and high production.
Cattle is breed in open-pit, in temperate weather conditions, fertile lands, ideal temperatures and plenty of rainfall, (given the high number of rivers and streams), all of which guarantee the animals’ well being. Apart from the livestock producer and the industrial producer who processes meat with good practices, the sector is a psource of employment for many people. The main breeds are HEREFORD Y ABERDEEN ANGUS.
Uruguay consumes the most meat per capita in the world.
It produces nearly 550,000 tons of meat per year, from which 180,000 are destined for internal consumption and 370,000 are exported all over the globe.
This meat goes to over 100 countries and represents a quarter of the country’s total exports.
In order to reach these goals, our country has designed the best information systems for cattle in the world: traceability and an electronic system of information for the meat industry.
The investment in technology is aimed at learning about natural cycles and how to keep track of them, using the tools provided by the Information Society.
Such achievements, together with Uruguay’s sanitary status and its high quality products, have introduced Uruguayan meat in the most demanding markets.
Ovine meat and high-value wool production also play a pivotal role in the international markets; their exports reach over 30 destinations.
